American Rug is a third generation Radner family business, started in 1905 as a rug and window cleaning company. Under the leadership of William Radner and his wife Edythe, the company grew and gained a reputation as an outstanding local firm in Holyoke, Massachusetts.
In 1945 at the end of World War II Sidney Radner (2nd generation) expanded the rug cleaning operation and began to sell floor covering from a small section of its cleaning plant. The business grew at a steady pace so in 1956 American Rug Cleaning Co. made a move to the top of Dwight St Holyoke at the intersection of Rt 5. The new location housed a state of the art cleaning plant and a large retail showroom displaying all types of floor covering and area rugs including Karastan, America’s finest power loomed carpets and area rugs.
American Rug started taking on unique projects that were never done before, like carpeted playgrounds, bridges and traffic islands, in the city of Springfield with real astro turf, previously used only on ball fields. American Rug worked closely with the manufacturer Monsanto during the installation to make sure that the end result would be totally satisfactory.
In the 1960’s American Rug laid out a huge green carpet made of Dupont 501 nylon on High St in Holyoke for the St Patrick’s Day parade. Thousands of people and all the floats, cars and other motor vehicles drove over this large piece of carpet. American Rug planned to show how well the carpet could be cleaned (after the torture test) in their advanced cleaning plant. American Rug showed the comparison of a brand new piece of carpet against the soiled material that American Rug cleaned. The results were nothing less than outstanding.
In 1989 William Radner, 3rd generation, took over upon his father Sidney Radner’s retirement. It was not long after this that American Rug was widely known in Western Mass to be able to handle large jobs that required great capability with their crew of highly trained certified installers that were store employees.
American Rug’s crews have tackled jobs as far as Washington DC and Bangor Maine. American Rug has even sold and contracted out work to competent installation crews in Palm Beach, Florida condominiums. Large schools, universities, insurance companies, air force bases, retail centers, 5 star Inns, restaurants, banquet halls etc are handled with great expertise.
Whether a job is commercial or residential American Rug is able to handle the most difficult of installations.
American Rug has received the Advocate “Best Of” award for eleven consecutive years, 2001-2011 and has the proud distinction of having one of the few Karastan certified installers on its staff for more than 30 years. This certification requires great skill and general knowledge over and above the average certification, which the majority of installers working today do not possess. William Radner the current owner and president visits trade shows and seminars to stay current with the latest industry trends and technology. William Radner travels to the Neocon Commercial Exhibition in Chicago, a trade show attended by no other floor covering retailer in the Western Mass area.
